Baltimore, Maryland-November 16, 2019-The Philly Cannons, ranked 19th in the country, suffered their first loss of the season dropping a decision to the Baltimore Hawks 152-147 in an American Basketball Association (ABA) contest. The Hawks used record setting shooting from three-point range to hold off the Cannons, who have never beaten Baltimore in three attempts since the Cannons were founded and began play in the ABA in 2016.
Baltimore, ahead by as much as 31 points in the second quarter, hit a franchise record 34 three pointers against the Cannons. “They hit a record number of threes off just second chances [and] hard to beat any team who shoots double digit more field goals then your team,” said Cannons Head Coach Andre Rivers. “We made some minor mistakes like not talking on defense [such as] not switching or getting out on the shooters quick enough which resulted in us giving up 34 made 3 pointers,” offered first year lead guard, Khayyir Laws, who lead the Cannons with 34 points.
The Cannons, shorthanded with only nine players dressing, had five players in double figures. In addition to Laws, forward Kyle Rose had 30 and Thomas Farrior contributed 28 points off the bench in his second game with the Cannons. Steady veteran Shawn Green contributed 23 while Shawn Williams had 14. “Very entertaining game to be a part of…difference was rebounding and giving them second chance opportunities [but] ultimately it made us a better team, and showed us what we need to work on to be the best team in our region,” concluded Rivers. “Overall, I feel like we could of beat them,” said Laws.
The Cannons will host the West Virginia Warlocks at their satellite gymnasium in Steelton, Pennsylvania on Saturday, November 30, 2019 for a 7:00 PM tip-off. The matchup will take place at the legendary Martin J. Benkovic Gymnasium, located at 250 Reynders Avenue, Steelton, PA 17113.
