King of Prussia, Pennsylvania-November 3, 2019-The Philly Cannons opened the 2019-2020 American Basketball Association (ABA) season with an 87-85 road win over the Norristown Knights. The Cannons are in their fourth season in the ABA, which has seen an explosion in the area with new franchises. In addition to The Cannons and Norristown, the Philly Raiders, Pottstown Flames, West Chester Wildcats, and the Camden Monarchs are all ABA member organizations in the local tri state area.

Norristown, having won at West Chester 124-120 in OT Saturday night, gave the Cannons all they could handle and would have went to over time again if not for Shawn Green’s running floater with 2 seconds remaining to give the Cannons the difference in the game. “We had a lot of players in foul trouble [and] showed how deep we were with everybody being able to step up and have there one imprint in the game individually,” said first year Head Coach Andre Rivers, who takes over as the second Head Coach in Cannons franchise history.

Rivers earned his first ABA victory after going 1-1 during the exhibition season with a loss to the Wyoming Valley Clutch and a win over the non-league Dallas Heat (TX). Rivers, a former Cannon player, took over for Roger Beckwith, who remains in the front office as General Manager & Team President.

The Cannons had balanced scoring led by Green’s 19 points. Newcomers, Shawn Williams added 15, including a 3-5 effort from three point range, and Karl Lewis added 10 with several high flying, highlight reel dunks. “The keys were getting stops, and finishing plays, ultimately playing together and trusting each other,” offered Coach Rivers. The Cannons open their home schedule next Saturday, November 9, 2019 at 1:00 PM with a match up with the Pottstown Flames at the Lucien E. Blackwell Community Center, located at 791 N. 47th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19131.

The ABA consists of over 150 teams nationwide, and the Cannons compete in the Mid Atlantic Division with the Baltimore Hawks, DC Soul, Hub City Hogs , Pottstown Flames, Virginia Vets, West Chester Wildcats, York Buccaneers, Richmond Elite Basketball, PG Valor, Fredericksburg Grizzlies, Roanake Rising Stars and the West Virginia Warlocks.
