The Philly Cannons led by 22 points at the half and weathered a comeback by the visiting, upstart West Chester Wildcats to hold on for a 116-100 victory in a third round American Basketball Association (ABA) single elimination playoff contest. The Cannons (12-5) will move on to face the Baltimore Hawks (14-5) tomorrow, Saturday, March 23, 2019 at 4:00 PM. The game will take place at St. Francis Academy, located at 501 E Chase Street in Baltimore, MD. Admission is $10.
The Cannons were led by Marcus Thomas’ 30 points and Will Brown’s 21. The Cannons placed three others in double figures including Ramair “Juice” Garners 15, Deione “Dex” Lathem’s foul plagued 13 and Kyle Rose’s contribution of 11 off the bench. “It’s just so hard to defeat an opponent of West Chester’s caliber three times… and we feel fortunate to be able to move on the next round,” said Coach Roger Beckwith. Mere Wilcox (37) and Marquis Marshall (31) paced the Wildcats.
The Philly Cannons and the Baltimore Hawks have only met once before, with the Hawks coming to Philly and leaving with a 126-109 victory on November 26, 2017. “We are quite aware of the challenge ahead of us; Baltimore is a veteran team in the ABA, a perennial contender and they have star power with Aquille Carr who went for 65 in an ABA game earlier this year,” said Beckwith. “But I would be very surprised if we don’t show up with our collective A game,” reasoned the 3rd year Head Coach. The winner advances to face the Wyoming Valley Clutch on Sunday, March 24, 2019.
